Stock LED Radial Heatsinks

We offer a comprehensive and growing range of stock LED radial heatsinks, all of which can be supplied to customer requirements, ranging from as simply cut to length through to fully machined parts.

Many of our radial LED heatsinks incorporate extruded holes and tee slots to facilitate the mounting of the LED’s thereby obviating the need for machining.

Larger Radial Fin Heatsinks can be achieved by using quadrant extrusion assembled to make complete 360 degree radial fin heatsink, suitable for high power cooling applications.

Bay Lighting, Flood Lighting, Street Lighting and high power LED cooling

To complement our suite of radial fin LED heatsinks we also stock a large range of standard comb heatsinks designed for Bay Lighting, Flood Lighting, Street Lighting and other high power LED cooling applications.

Channel profiles for LED strip lights

Available from stock for LED strips is a range of small aluminium channel profiles which can be supplied in any length up to 5 metres.

Effective Strategies for LED Cooling Solutions

Introduction to LED Cooling

  • LED cooling is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and lifespan of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in various lighting applications.
  • High power LEDs generate significant heat, which can reduce their performance and reliability if not managed properly.
  • Effective LED cooling solutions involve the use of heat sinks, thermal management materials, and innovative cooling techniques.
  • The goal of LED cooling is to maintain a low junction temperature, ensuring optimal thermal performance and reliable operation.
  • Proper cooling also helps to prevent overheating, which can cause a decrease in luminous flux and lead to premature failure.

Understanding Thermal Management

  • Thermal management is the process of controlling the flow of heat within a system to maintain optimal temperatures and prevent overheating.
  • In LED lighting, thermal management involves the use of heat sinks, thermal interfaces, and other cooling components to dissipate heat generated by the LED chips.
  • The thermal resistance of a material or component determines its ability to conduct heat, with lower resistance indicating better heat transfer.
  • Understanding thermal management is essential for designing efficient LED cooling systems that can handle high power LEDs and ensure reliable performance.
  • Thermal conductivity, thermal radiation, and convection are key factors in thermal management, and must be considered when selecting materials and designing cooling systems.

LED Cooler Solutions

  • LED coolers are designed to dissipate heat generated by LEDs, and can be categorised into active and passive cooling solutions.
  • Active cooling solutions, such as liquid cooling and air cooling, use external power to circulate a coolant or blow air to remove heat.
  • Passive cooling solutions, such as heat sinks and thermal interfaces, rely on natural convection and conduction to dissipate heat.
  • LED cooler solutions must be designed to provide optimal thermal management, taking into account factors such as thermal resistance, heat transfer, and ambient temperature.
  • Copper heat sinks and led heat sinks are popular choices for LED cooling due to their high thermal conductivity and efficient heat dissipation.

High Power LED Considerations

  • High power LEDs require specialised cooling solutions to manage the excessive heat generated during operation.
  • The junction temperature of high power LEDs must be carefully controlled to prevent overheating and ensure reliable performance.
  • Heat sinks and thermal management materials with high thermal conductivity, such as copper and aluminium, are often used in high power LED applications.
  • Liquid cooling and air cooling are also effective solutions for high power LEDs, offering efficient heat dissipation and reliable operation.
  • The design of high power LED cooling systems must consider factors such as thermal energy, cooling performance, and electrical energy to ensure optimal performance.

Printed Circuit Board Considerations

  • Printed circuit boards (PCBs) play a critical role in LED cooling, as they provide a platform for the LED chips and heat sinks.
  • The design of the PCB must consider factors such as thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, and heat transfer to ensure optimal cooling performance.
  • PCBs with high thermal conductivity, such as those made from copper or aluminium, are often used in LED applications.
  • The use of thermal vias and thermal interfaces can also help to improve the cooling performance of the PCB.
  • PCBs must be designed to provide a reliable and efficient cooling solution for the LED chips, and must be able to withstand the high temperatures generated during operation.

Evaluating LED Cooling Systems

  • Evaluating LED cooling systems involves assessing their ability to provide optimal thermal management and prevent overheating.
  • Factors such as thermal resistance, heat transfer, and ambient temperature must be considered when evaluating LED cooling systems.
  • The use of thermal modeling and simulation can help to predict the thermal performance of LED cooling systems.
  • Experimental testing and measurement can also be used to evaluate the thermal performance of LED cooling systems.
  • The overall efficiency and reliability of LED cooling systems depend on their ability to provide optimal thermal management and prevent overheating.
