Real Connections and Green Tech: What We Learnt from BAL Group’s InstallerSHOW Debut

By Steve Kane, Managing Director, BAL Group

There is no denying that digital communication makes business faster. Most of our working days are spent staring at email inboxes or sorting out logistics over a quick phone call. But as helpful as technology is, it can make it incredibly easy to write off face-to-face meetings as a thing of the past.

At BAL Group, we still believe that nothing beats sitting down across a table—or standing on an exhibition floor—with a real person.

That is exactly why we took the plunge and exhibited at the InstallerSHOW at the Birmingham NEC for the very first time last week. With over 20 years of experience under our belts delivering energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions, we decided it was time to bring all three of our specialised divisions—BAL Heatsinks, Radiant Heating & Cooling, and Heatech—under one roof to show the industry what we can do.

For a company that prides itself on being open, accessible, and straightforward to talk to, the show was the perfect place to put our philosophy into practice. It was fantastic to catch up with long-term clients, familiar associates, and old friends, while introducing ourselves to plenty of new faces too.

Why Trade Shows Still Matter for Modern B2B Businesses

When you invest time and resources into a massive event like the InstallerSHOW, you naturally want to see real results. For us, the success of the exhibition went far beyond just collecting business cards. It proved that in the manufacturing and engineering sectors, human relationships are still the ultimate driver of growth.

Here is exactly how the show paid off for the business:

  • Strengthening Old Alliances: It gave us a rare opportunity to catch up in person with valued clients, reinforcing partnerships that have been built over years.
  • Turning Enquiries into Reality: Being face-to-face allowed our technical teams to answer complex design questions on the spot, turning casual conversations into concrete project plans.
  • Exhibitor-to-Exhibitor Collaboration: Some of the best opportunities don’t actually come from the visitors walking past; they come from the other businesses in the hall. Talking shop with fellow exhibitors opened up several valuable avenues for future collaboration.
  • Supply Chain Catch-ups: The show allowed us to spend time with our own suppliers, ensuring our raw material networks stay resilient and well-aligned.
  • Leadership on the Ground: Having our Managing Director, Steve Kane, actively walking the floor meant we could make quick, executive connections right there and then.

Thermal Management & Climate Control: Engineering for a Low-Carbon Future

With the UK’s net-zero targets and building regulations putting massive pressure on contractors and specifiers, our main goal at the NEC was to showcase a practical, integrated approach to carbon-cutting climate control. Here is what each of our teams brought to the table.

BAL Aluminium Heatsinks: Powering Green Infrastructure

You can’t have green technology without smart thermal management. Our heatsink division brought along our wide range of aluminium heatsinks, putting a massive emphasis on products built specifically for clean-energy industries. As electric vehicle (EV) charging networks expand and solar energy installations accelerate across the UK, our custom cooling architectures are playing a vital role in keeping these high-stress electronics running efficiently.

Radiant Heating & Cooling: British Manufacturing at its Best

Operating out of our centrally located factory right here in Birmingham, Radiant Heating & Cooling manufactures commercial radiant panels designed to keep large public and private spaces comfortable without wasting energy. You will find our systems specified everywhere from local schools and hospitals to vast manufacturing plants and corporate office blocks.

Because every building has different layout constraints and thermal demands, we manufacture our panels using three distinct pipe size ranges to get the output exactly right:

  • 12mm Pipes: Perfect for low-profile layouts or precise, localized climate needs.
  • 15mm Pipes: The reliable, versatile standard that perfectly balances fluid flow and heat transfer for typical commercial builds.
  • 21mm Pipes: The heavy-duty choice for industrial spaces that require maximum heat distribution.

Heatech: Straightforward Systems for Contractors

Completing our lineup, the Heatech team set up a brilliant display showcasing our latest underfloor heating systems, air control units, and boiler room setups. The focus here was entirely on reliability and ease of installation—giving building contractors and plumbing engineers the reliable hardware they need to set up multi-source plant rooms without the usual headaches.

A Surprise Technical Meeting on the Floor

We practice what we preach when it comes to exploring the exhibition floor. Despite a packed schedule and a very busy BAL Group stand, I made sure to carve out time to visit other stands and chat with fellow exhibitors.

While stopping by the stand of Lawton Tubes—our trusted, Coventry-based copper tube supplier—the trip took a brilliant turn. I was fortunate enough to run into former Arsenal, Aston Villa, and England international football legend Paul Merson, who was appearing at the show. It was a great moment that perfectly captured the vibrant, collaborative energy of the InstallerSHOW, proving that even a hard-working manufacturing event can serve up a few memorable surprises.

Engineering Support That Doesn’t Stop at the Factory Door

If there was one major takeaway from our time at the NEC, it is that delivering high-quality hardware is only half the battle. What truly sets us apart is our commitment to value-added design and engineering services across every single one of our product lines.

We don’t just expect you to pick a product out of a catalogue and hope for the best. Our engineering teams work hand-in-hand with building services consultants, MEP contractors, and electronics designers right from the earliest blueprint stage. By simulating thermal performance and tweaking configurations before manufacturing even begins, we make sure that every system is optimized for real-world efficiency, compliance, and long-term energy savings.

If you are planning a commercial build or trying to solve a tricky thermal management issue on your latest product design, please contact the BAL Group team today. We would love to chat through your ideas—ideally over a real cup of coffee!
